What Is Interventional Pain Management?

What makes interventional pain management different than other pain management treatments is that it uses minimally-invasive techniques and procedures to identify and treat the root cause of your pain.

Pain management is an important part of a patient’s treatment and recovery from orthopedic and neurological disorders or injuries. Pain can cause loss of sleep, depression, and many other limitations.

Our interventional pain management physician and team will find the source of your pain, then use safe, effective treatments – chosen just for you – to reduce or eliminate your pain.

Interventional Pain Treatments

Common interventional pain treatments include:

Nerve Blocks and Injections

Injections provide temporary pain relief. An epidural steroid injection deposits steroids directly at the nerve root that’s inflamed. Other common injections are facet joint injections, single nerve root blocks, and sacroiliac joint injections, among other joints throughout the body.

Neuroablation

Also known as radiofrequency rhizotomy or radiofrequency ablation. With x-ray guidance and a needle with an electrode at the tip that gets heated, neuroablation temporarily turns off a nerve’s ability to send pain messages to your brain.

Electrical Stimulation

With this procedure, a stimulator is implanted along with an electrical lead to send electrical pulses directly to the spinal cord to regulate your pain.

Determining the Cause of Your Pain

Determining the Cause of Your Pain

After discussing your medical history and conducting a physical exam, our physician may recommend diagnostic tests to locate the exact cause of your pain, including:

  • Imaging studies including X-rays, musculoskeletal ultrasound, MRI, or computed tomography (CT) scan
  • Electromyography and nerve conduction studies (EMG/NCS) test how nerves and muscles talk to each other and to find a reason for pain, numbness, and weakness
  • Blood work
  • Diagnostic injections
